Recent climatic changes in the Arctic Ocean and, in particular, the rapid decline of its sea ice cover are expected to have important global impacts on climate, the environment and society, and presage a new era of accelerated man intervention in the Arctic through commercial navigation, exploitation of natural resources, military activities and tourism. Interest in the science and technology of sea ice is therefore greater than ever.

The sea ice research community in the UK numbers some 40-60 researchers and is a significant resource of knowledge, experience, and talent. The purpose of the UK Sea Ice Group is to foster communication and collaboration within the UK sea ice community and allied areas such as physical oceanography, marine biology, and climate modelling. The UK Sea Ice Group is supported by The Challenger Society.
The 2008 MeetingThe 2008 meeting of the UK Sea Ice Group is being organized by Clare Postlethwaite, Miguel Maqueda and Graham Tattersall. The meeting will follow the Challenger Society Conference 2008 and will take place on Friday 12th September 2008, beginning at 9 a.m. and finishing at around 4.30 p.m., and will be held in Hen Goleg (building number 43 on the map) at the University of Bangor.
The meeting will consist of a number of talks and posters, with time built into the schedule to allow proper discussion and debate. Oral and poster presentations are requested covering all aspects of sea ice, including climate modelling, sea ice mechanics and thermodynamics, observations, ice-ocean interactions, and sea ice biology.

Abstract submissionIf you would like to give a talk or poster, please contact us with the details of your presentation by Thursday 4th September 2008.
Please note that the deadline for registration and booking accommodation at the University of Bangor is Friday 25th August.
Registration and accommodationRegistration for the UK Sea Ice Group Meeting and accommodation is through the Challenger Society Conference on-line registration web page. The deadline is Monday 25th August 2008. Indicate that you will be attending the UK Sea Ice Group Meeting and also your requirements for evening meals and accommodation. Convenient accommodation is offered in the University of Bangor Halls of Residence. You are advised to register early if you want to be certain of obtaining accommodation at the university. A Group dinner will be organised for the evening of Friday 12th September. Please indicate via cfpo@pol.ac.uk if you are interested in attending the dinner.
AcknowledgementsWe are grateful to Craig Corbett from the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory for his hard work in maintaining this website.
The Proudman Oceanographic (POL) scientific research focuses on oceanography encompassing global sea-levels and geodesy, numerical modelling of continental shelf seas and coastal sediment processes. This research alongside activities of surveying, monitoring, data management and forecasting provides strategic support for the wider mission of the Natural Environment Research Council.
As a public funded body it is part of our remit to inform the public of the science and research undertaken at the laboratory. Attending events like the 'Ocean Awareness Weekend' at the Blue Planet Aquarium offers the opportunity for our scientists to meet members of the public and present the laboratory's work.
The Natural Environment Research Council is one of the UK's eight Research Councils. It uses a budget of about £ 350m a year to fund and carry out impartial scientific research in the sciences of the environment. NERC trains the next generation of independent environmental scientists. It is addressing some of the key questions facing mankind, such as global warming, renewable energy and sustainable economic development.
