The POL Contribution
POL brings to the partnership the UK focus for shelf sea physics and sedimental processes. We also provide national operational functions such as coastal flood forecasting. We seek to gain accelerated exploitation of shelf sea science by the operational user community. POL will contribute to NCOF:

• Sea level science through the National Tidal and Sea Level Facility
• Modelling and measurement of the physical processes in ocean margin seas
• nfrastructure for coupling models of physical processes, biogeochemical processes and ecosystems
• Marine data management through the British Oceanographic Data Centre
• Engineering and technological development
• Education
• Enterprise and knowledge transfer
• Advice to government, business and charities
• Promotion of engagement between science and society

Oceans 2025 Consultation

Seven Marine Centres in the United Kingdom have joined forces to prepare a coordinated bid to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for a programme of Strategic Research called Oceans 2025. Previously the seven institutions involved have all been funded separately by NERC for their own individual strategic programmes.

In contrast to NERC's funding for curiosity-driven, blue skies research, its Strategic Research funding is for programmes of directed research addressing areas of present or anticipated national need, and with environmental issues where sustained national capability or major critical mass is required.

There are seven Marine Centres contributing to Oceans 2025, including us here at POL, the other six are:

• National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
• Plymouth Marine Laboratory
• Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (Plymouth)
• Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (Plymouth)
• Scottish Association for Marine Science (Dunstaffnage, Scotland)
• Sea Mammal Research Unit (St Andrews, Scotland)
